And for Benjamin and the player re-living these bite-sized moments can be difficult at times. But no two moments are the same in this story, no two experiences are alike. When you blink time moves forward and when you don’t, you get to experience the narrative further. If you happen to have a webcam, Before Your Eyes is that much more immersive and inclusive. Which makes it that much easier for them to relate to the character. Players grow up alongside Benjamin, and experience all the ups and downs life throws at him.

But it’s also full of gut-wrenching story beats and emotionally intense experiences. Benjamin’s journey is happy, it’s full of colorful moments and whimsical adventures. Sometimes that’s a really long and emotional sequence, where often other times it’s hard to keep watching.
This offers players the option to experience what their eyes can handle. Re-living his memories and confronting his past. No matter how heartwarming the moment or how long he decides to stay there he will eventually have to jump forward. It is later revealed that every time Benjamin blinks he will jump ahead in time. In turn, he asks Benjamin to tell him his life story while not skipping any details. Who explains that he must present his life’s story to the gatekeeper for safe passage. But before that is possible he’s discovered by the Ferryman. Players take on the role of one deceased Benjamin Brynn on his way to the afterlife. But the characters you meet along the way feel like familiar faces. 17 on Netflix.Not only is the narrative of the game mysterious and outlandish. The results have been somewhat mixed, but with “Behind Her Eyes,” feasting your eyes on it qualifies as time well spent.

Netflix has cast a wide net in the effort to keep its shelves stocked – and fuel its global expansion plans – turning to more series produced outside the US. If nothing else, amid the current content glut unpredictability is refreshing. The clever part in the way writers Steve Lightfoot and Angela LaManna (“The Punisher”) have constructed the show is the extent to which it makes you think you’ve seen all this before, then subverts those expectations. The performances, thankfully, help get through the rough patches (or should), with Brown as an everywoman in a strange predicament – bonding with Adele, but drawn to David – and Bateman’s brooding intensity resembling a modern-day version of a character from a Jane Austen novel. Granted, one could argue the shift in tone comes a bit out of left field, but therein lies the fun of it. Plus, there’s the mystery about Adele’s days in a mental-health facility. What looks like a tale of infidelity with a sort-of reverse “Fatal Attraction” vibe – it’s the wife who might be the stalker – takes off in unanticipated directions and yields genuine surprises. Moreover, Louise gradually befriends David’s seemingly perfect wife, Adele (Eve Hewson), which raises questions about what soured their relationship, and a troubled history that dribbles out (too slowly in the first few episodes) via a series of teasing flashbacks.Īnswers await, however, and as adapted from Sarah Pinborough’s book, they prove far more interesting and unexpected than the familiar set-up suggests. Not the best judgment, perhaps, but no real harm done.Īlas, David turns out to be her new boss in the psychiatrist’s office where she works, and the tension between them only grows. A divorced mom, when her plans for a rare night out fizzle she somewhat impulsively ends up flirting with a married man, David (Tom Bateman). Initially this six-episode British production comes across as just another soap, placing its central figure, Louise (Simona Brown), in an extremely uncomfortable position. By the time it’s over, this sci-fi-tinged limited series becomes a buzzworthy binge, one that will likely have you thinking back to clues you might have missed along the way. The less you know about “Behind Her Eyes” going in the better, and while the Netflix drama feels slow-going at first, patience has its rewards.
